Things to do in Manchester ... any advice?
Q. After Christmas Iâm planning on visiting the UK to spend time with relatives. Iâll be with my relatives for one week, but Iâm also planning on spending another week for visiting Manchester and London. My relatives live in Liverpool and Iâve already been to all the sights there, but never Manchester or London. I live in Raleigh, NC and my options are flying direct to London, or going to Manchester first but with a connection in Chicago (which usually ends up being a nightmare, Iâve had my luggage lost by AA at OâHare and thereâs usually never ending delays). Iâm thinking about flying into London first and then Manchester on the way back, but I still don't know which would be better. If I do go to London first, should I drive or take the train to Liverpool? And as for Manchester, what would you recommend for visiting in the city? Is the Peak District worth visiting?

I'm still organizing my trip so any advice is appreciated.

A. Hi there.

The airport at London, Heathrow is very big, Manchester is easier. In My view, nearer to Liverpool if you can manage to fly in there.

I would use the train rather than drive, don't forget you will be tired by the time you arrive and British roads are not easy. Fast and crowded. There are also coaches from Euston in London or Manchester and you can fly into John Lennon airport in Liverpool. You may want to investigate this, but by the time you have swapped airports/planes and waited, you could be there by train.

If you are going to go to Manchester, take the train or coach from Liverpool. Parking is dreadful. Look out for China Town there are restaurants to suit every budget but you have to search them out, shops too, it looks like there are just buildings but a small entrance opens up inside. There is an art gallery near by and a good tourist information office where you will get a free map and excellent advice. It depends on what you like to look at.

There is a tour of Granada Television Studios which you may enjoy.
Often in the UK there are plenty of free places to visit which are not advertised so it is always worth asking at a tourist information office. Money can soon get spent and free does not always mean rubbish.

If it is winter when you arrive the Peak District and Lake District areas are, in my view, muddy and damp. Beautiful in late Spring and Summer.

Winter time I would suggest indoor activities and sight seeing.

A trip to York, could be done in a day but two days may be better, the Castle Museum can take a whole day to look round and you will not have seen it all. Lots of little bed and breakfast places so you can look round and find somewhere you like the look of when you arrive rather than book in advance. I prefer York to Manchester or Chester.

London has everything you could need to see, it can work out expensive too. Again there are loads of free places to visit, enough to take up several days. Museums and Art galleries, Wallace collection is worth looking for off Oxford St. See the changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace and walk along the Mall. The Royal Albert Hall needs to be examined as a piece of architecture from the outside. A visit to Harrods store is essential and the big wheel London Eye you may enjoy too.

Taking English Afternoon tea at one of the big expensive hotels like the Dorchester will cost up to £60 a person but it is an experience you will never forget.

Madam Tussaud waxworks is always popular, check the internet site for a discount voucher before you leave.

Hotels are usually 'bed and breakfast' Check if it is 'continental' or 'full English'. Full English will set you up for the day as a substantial meal but continental may well only be toast jam and coffee. For mid day try a pub lunch, often the best place for a meal. Always choose somewhere crowded. It means it is good value.

Eating out is often much cheaper at Lunch than it is at Dinner time so if the budget gets tight, eat out mid day, when they often have specials on and get a Mac or sandwich in the evening. Many hotels do not permit you to take food in to your room you have purchased out side, so if you do this be discreet.

I hope you enjoy your stay.
