Q. I was planning to go to NYC for spring break. What are the cheapest hotels/flights? I want a good experience so Im looking for 4+ stars, and the flight from the west coast, Seattle, Portland, San DIego... A. 4+ stars won't come cheap. If you're a student, I would suggest you try staying at the West Side YMCA near Columbus Circle - it's very near Central Park - and I've stayed there twice. It's like a dorm room - but it's safe, clean and cheap. The cafe on the main floor serves up a good cheap breakfast, too. If you are willing to do that, you'll have more money left over for shopping and shows! (IMHO, a visit to NYC isn't about being in your hotel room - it's about being out doing fun things!) If you REALLY can't stand that idea, try looking into the Amsterdam on the upper West Side. Again, not 4+ stars, but friendly staff, clean rooms and great location. Q. I am going to amsterdam with a group of 5 people and we are looking for a place to stay that will accomodate all 5 of us. I am looking for something in between vondel park and the center of the city (red light district) I am also looking for something that is reasonably priced and is not too expensive since we are all college students. Q. High speed train or rental car? Which is more practical and cheap? Going to Amsterdam for 7-9 days and want to spend a little bit of time in France to see castles and such. A. Amsterdam to Paris, no better option than the train. If you want to do day trips from and to Paris, get a hotel on the edge of the city, near the right motorway, and rent a car there, either a local rental location or have it delivered to your hotel. If you do a few days Paris and a few days castles, train out to a city near the castles and rent a car there. You can rent cars at all or most French railway stations if you book in advance. Only if you want to roam around all the way, and not stay in Paris itself, you might want to rent a car in the Netherlands. If you book your train early, or are willing to take odd times, you will beat the price of a rental car by miles. Early booking of a rental car will take a little of the rental cost but you will still be paying gas/petrol and that is expensive in Europe...

Q. We would like to see Tulip gardens in Holland. They say it is like carpets of flowers. Can you please tell me what is the best time to see Tulips. Where should we go, to Amstradam or another destination in Holland? What hotel to stay in? How many days will it take to see the flowers? A. I go to the Netherlands two or three times every spring to see Keukenhof Garden transition from the early spring flowers through the tulips. In March, there won't be many tulips - most will be in one of the pavillions. The peak time for tulips is usually toward the end of April. It's very easy to get to Keukenhof. There are Connexion buses that run from Schiphol airport or the train station at Leiden. You can get a combined ticket that covers the round trip ride and entrance to the garden. I prefer to go to Leiden because there's an earlier bus.
