Q. I am going to Guangzhou China in a few months and wanted to know a few things:
1) How does the cost of living compare to the USA?
2) How much are Hotels there (roughly)
3) Can I get by without knowing any Chinese or will I need to employ a translator?
4) Any other info from someone who has been there would be great!

A. Guangzhou, also known as Goat City, is the provincial capital of Guangdong Province. It is the political, economic, cultural, and technological and transportation center of Southern China and the open coastal city is famous for being an example of a comprehensive reform experiment area within China. The Guangzhou Government has jurisdiction over 10 districts including Yuexiu, Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe, Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Panyu, Luogang, Nansha and 2 county-level cities: Conghua and Zengcheng. Guangzhou has mild weather, abundant rainfall, green in all four seasons, and wonderful scenery. It enjoys the honor of being known as "Flower City".
Guangzhou is famous for its history and culture. Legend has it that five immortals arrived in Guangzhou wearing colorful clothes and riding colorful immortal sheep and the sheep held ears of rice in their mouths. They presented ears of rice to the people and proclaimed Guangzhou would never have famine. Thereafter, Guangzhou was known as Goat City or Sui Cheng and Wu Yang (five sheep) became the symbol of Guangzhou.
Historical documents state that, the city walls were established in 214 B.C., and the city's history reaches 2210 years. It has many important cultural and historical sites, which vividly reflect the development of Guangzhou's historical phases.
Guangzhou was the starting point of the Silk Route and hence has many historic spots which date from this period and later. Sites such as the Zhenhai Tower, Wuxian Taoist Temple, Tomb of King of Southern Yue Dynasty, Chenjia Ancestral Shrine, Liurong Temple, Guangxiao Temple, Huaisheng Temple and Shishi are of particular interest.
Guangzhou also has a distinguished place in modern history as can be evidenced at Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall, Mausoleum at Huang Hua Gang, Memorial Mausoleum to the Martyrs, Luxun's Memorial, former site of Guangzhou Peasants Movement Institute, Sanyuanli Site of Revolting against British Rulers, and Site of Huangpu Military School. These historic spots as well as Baiyun Scenic Spot, Yuexiu Park, Liuhua Park, Lake Lu, Southern China Botanical Garden, Oriental Paradise, Southern Lake Paradise, and World Sight all form part of the wonderful landscape of the urban area in Guangzhou. Guangzhou is a city full of heroes, many of whom rose to significance during the revolutions in modern China.
The ancient Silk Route played an important role in trade in ancient times and Guangzhou now takes it's place a one of the most important trade centers in modern China. Since China's opening Guangzhou has been a leader in promoting economic and cultural communications and developing friendly relationship with foreign counties and presents all of the aspects of prosperity that have come because of its leadership in this area.
One of Guangzhou's other titles is "City of Overseas Chinese" because of the high number overseas Chinese and foreign residents in the city. According to statistics, Guangzhou has 1,350,000 overseas residents, including 520000 overseas Chinese and Chinese with foreign nationalities from over 116 countries and areas. 830,000 Hong Kong-Macau citizens, and more than 1,000,000 returned overseas Chinese and their families and relatives have been drawn to Guangzhou for business related reasons.
Located in southeast Guangdong Province and at the northern edge of Chu Chiang Delta, close to South China Sea it neighbors Hong Kong and Macao. Guangzhou is the transportation and communication hub for Southern China and is called the Southern Gate of China.
Guangzhou is the "Fruit Land", being home to 500 kinds of fruit including litchi, banana, papaya, and pineapple, which are honored as the Four Best Fruits in Southern China. A. If you are the size that you can buy clothes here then you will be lucky. Just remember the XXL = XL and so on. The clothing is built for Chinese sizes. Clothes can be very cheap. You will see many people on the streets selling hats, shirts, pants, scarfs, purses...etc.

As you say GUEST house I will assume you are looking for a Hostel? They can be ¥60 a night. But you will have to live with upwards to 6 people in a room. You can stay at a hotel for ¥120 to ¥200 a night here. But again How long will you be in Guangzhou?
Guangzhou has so many Hotel.
Shopping is all over the place.
As always the price and quality is determined by the location. The Big malls have "name brand" stuff and it will be much more. You may see a ADIDAS shirt (fake) on the street. The vendor may ask ¥35... and you have to bargain. If you are white or resemble a westerner you will get the "SKIN" tax. You can get that ADIDAS street shirt for ¥20. In the big department store you really can't bargain and it will cost maybe ¥50 to ¥100.
This goes for shoes too. You will see tons of Knock-off shoes being sold on the street. The sizes are limited to 11USA. I have a size 13-14 =(51 Euro) and I can't find those. Shoes and sneaks on the street will cost ¥10 to ¥30. A real pair of NIKES can go up t0 ¥300 and to ¥1,500.
A great place to shop is BEIJING LU of Metro line 1. METRO STOP GONG YUAN QIAN.

There are many places in GZ.
If you are looking for a great place I would suggest this one. ¥38 for a foot massage and ¥38 for a Body Massage. Fully clothed. This place does a great job. You will love it.
Best way to get to it is....
LINE 3 Metro Exit TIYU XILU Exit A. You will see a 7-11 when you exit. Go Left. Get on the street. Go Left again. Walk to the next street. Turn Right. Keep walking on the right side. Walk almost all the way down the street. On the right it will be. You will past a Dentist and a wine shop on your right.
Like I said, there are hundreds of Massage places. An Oil massage will cost from ¥70 to ¥300. Just depends on the place. It is really hit and miss. Most Oil massage are just ok. Done by not so good masseurs. The above place I mentioned will give you the best massage for sure.
There are also 24 hour SPAS and SAUNAS. These places are great. You can stay for 24 hours and only spend ¥150. But... you can get many services there as add ons. There is an entrance fee. Usually ¥100-¥150. This will be dropped if you choose to get a massage. While in the 24 hour places you can get foot massage, ear cleaning, manicure, head and shoulder massage. Food is free and so are SOFT DRINKS and fruit. You sit in a "La-Z-Boy style chair that will have a TV hooked up to it. Many places have free internet, Pool rooms, Sauna Pools, Showers and body scrubs. The massage can be ¥150 to ¥300 depending on what you choose. The massage will not be "CLEAN". If you go to the 24 hour place I would not get the high priced massage. Get all the other frills and you an walk out feeling great for under ¥250. Then go to that other massage place for ¥38.
