I'm going to Miami to visit the University of Miami, and was wondering what other things to do and see?
Q. I live far away and will not be able to come back anytime soon, so what should I do while in Miami? Also, what are some good thrift stores/interesting shops that are in safe areas that I should check out? And could anybody tell me how long of a drive it is from Coral Gables to the Keys? Thanks!!!!!
A. Since you are in Coral Gables, I would visit the famous Biltmore Hotel. A gorgeous historic building -- and often they have live music on Thursday nights. In Coral Gables, you can also find boutique shops and cafes on Miracle Mile (folks at UM can tell you how to get there). Plus, I would definitely check out Books and Books, a much-loved independent bookstore in Coral Gables, with an outdoor courtyard.
I recommend that you visit Little Havana for a taste of Miami beyond the superficial (and tourist-packed) clubs on Miami Beach. Some folks perceive Little Havana as dangerous, but it's a false rumor (I live in the neighborhood and find it very safe!). There are plenty of unique shops on SW 8th St. (the famous Calle Ocho) from 14th Avenue to 17th Avenue in particular. This area is one of Miami's Arts Districts. Find tobacco shops where people roll cigars by hand, art galleries, the famous Domino Park (where the old guys play dominos all day), clothing stores, Cuban restaurants and some great places to hear live music at night.
I would also recommend visiting Key Biscayne (instead of the Keys). There's a beautiful National Park on the tip of the key, where you can rent bikes, lay out on the beach or go for a walk. Very pretty and not packed with fellow tourists.
Anyway, these are a couple of my recommendations, and neither is very far from Coral Gables/UM.
As for driving to the Keys, it's a little over 3 hours, I believe.
