Holiday in Scotland? How viable is it to stay in Glasgow and travel daily to Edinburgh?

Q. I'd like to spend a week in Edinburgh in August, but all hotels are booked and the prices are out of this world. In Glasgow the hotels are much, much cheaper. So do you think it would be a good idea to stay in Glasgow and travel to Edinburgh everyday, how viable is this? And is it safe to use the train at night? Thanks for your help

A. The Edinburgh festival is on in August and that drives prices there through the roof.

If you genuinely don't want to spend any time in Glasgow you could consider staying somewhere a bit closer like Stirling or even a motel in Livingston or Fife.

Travelling back and forward to Glasgow is perfectly feasible though, it's only 45 minutes or so on the train.
