How to get from Fiumicino Airport to Vatican City late at night?

Q. I'm arriving at 11pm on the night I land in Rome. My hotel is Hotel Raganelli. Is taxi the best option?
Are there shuttle buses to the hotels at that time of night? Would that be any better?

I'm guessing I'm looking at a taxi fee rate of about 50 Euros?
Also: are the taxis safe? What kind should I look out for (any particular colour or logo)?

A. Yes, at that time of night I'd just get a taxi directly to the hotel. The last train from Fiumicino leaves for Roma Termini at 11:38 pm. There's a good chance that you won't be able to get to the platform for that one and you would still have to get a taxi from the train station to the hotel.

A. A cab from the airport to the hotel is the most efficient way to go, but that will cost 40 euro plus a small supplement for the late hour. The hotel website http://www.hotelcardinalrome.com/hotel_location/index.php recommends taking the local train from the airport to San Pietro (you change in Trastevere) and then catch a cab or a bus (#190F). http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD (Use Fiumicino aero for the airport and Roma San Pietro for the stations).

At the late hour you arrive, there is only one remaining train (at 22:57) and that does not get you to the San Pietro station until 23:41. If it were me, I would check with the hotel regarding the transfer service they supply (see the hotel website above) and then either go with that or a cab despite the extra cost.

why are most rome hotels booked out for october 2009?
Q. Is there some big event happening then, like a trade fair, or is Rome just always booked up way in advance?

A. I doubt that the hotels are actually booked for October 2009. It would be unusual to be able to book a place more than a year in advance.
