How best to get from Normandy to London?

Q. My wife & I are visiting Paris & London this spring and we are thinking of leaving Paris to visit Normandy's WW2 sites for a day, staying overnight in Normandy and then taking a ferry to England & a train to London. How best to do this?

Would it be better to do a day trip from Paris & go to London from there? (a wrinkle - my wife will not take the train under the Channel). Many thanks in advance.

A. There are many ferries that sail from Normandy to the UK so you can go directly after your visit without having to go back to Paris or going by Eurostar under the Channel. They sail from Caen, Dieppe or Le Havre, but Caen would be best for your purpose. You then take a train to London from your arrival port.
Scroll down this site to see the various routes:

Look at LD ,Transmanche or Brittany ferries.
Hotels, packages, etc... also figure on the same site.
Have a great trip!

Is it possible to visit Normandy without a car ?
Q. I am going to europe this summer and want to visit Normandy mostly some D-Day / WW2 related places. Is it possible to do this without a car (like take the train from paris and then take public transportation ?) Probably would sleep there on night because its 3 hours from paris. Considering a tour but they seem to be very expensive. Any advice on this ? Thanks

A. Whilst it is feasible to travel easily from Paris to Caen, Cherbourg or Bayeux by train, the places you wish to see, the landing beaches, mulberry harbours, derelict gun emplacements etcetera are not that well connected by public transport as far as the tourist is concerned. Therefore I would, as somebody that knows the area very well, suggest you either use a car and some very large-scale maps to find your way around or avail yourself of an organized tour. Although a day-tour would not be cheap, around 85 Euros per person, you have the advantage of not getting lost and you would have the advantage of a qualified guide who knows the area as well, if not better, than me.

If you are considering a tour, may I suggest you contact my good friends Battlebus Tours at office@battlebus.fr or telephone them on 0033 (0) 231 222882. they have English speaking staff who will be more than happy to help you, arranging to collect you from your hotel..

Where shall I go on holiday in Normandy?
Q. I want to go to Normandy but still unsure where, does anyone know of a good company to use?

A. The area around Honfleur, Deauville and Trouville is quite lovely. As to company what kind do you mean? Travel agent? Hotel? Or other kind?
