How much would it cost to go here?
Q. My dad loves World War 2, he is really fascinated by it and has a lot of artifacts and wants to learn as much as he can about it. I thought it would be cool if I could save up enough money to take him to Germany and the beaches of Normandy. I have no idea how much that would cost (including plane tickets, museums, etc) I live in Kansas. Would you have any idea or just a rough estimate? Thanks in advance.
A. Impossible to guess. Check to see if you can find a company that offers tours. A tour package would be your best option, most will include hotels, some meals and tours of sites, transportation around the countries you'll visit.
What are things to expect if I want to go on a vacation out of the country?
Q. Now, I know people leave the country all the time but just wait a minute... What am I supposed to do about the language barrier if I want to get a hotel or just generally enjoy myself? Theoretically, I'd be alone and the only person speaking English... so... um... What am I supposed to do about that? Or is there something I'm not calculating?
A. Well, I went to Paris last April, and in Paris there were a lot of restaurants there that actually spoke English and many pubs there too. The hotel I stayed at was an International hotel and the people that worked there knew a few different languages, and English was one. Once I went to Northern France, Normandy, the people were a little more confused with what I was talking about, but I had this translation book that had common sayings in French and that's how I ordered my food. So I would highly recommend getting a book on translating the language that fits the area you are going to. Good Luck
What sites do you recommend in France and northern Italy?
Q. Planning a family trip (2 adults + 2 teenage kids) in France and northern Italy. What sites, tours, activities do you recommend? Of particular interest are good tours/sites about WWII in the Normandy region, winery tours in Bordeaux and hotels/sites in the lake region of Italy.
A. If you are in Normandy area you MUST travel just a little further to Mont Saint Michel. Google it. We have been to so many different places all round the world and it is one of my favorite places. My wife has major health problems with breathlessness on the least exertion. I couldn't stop her walking a few steps at a time to the highest places on this historic island connected by a natural causeway to the mainland. I couldn't get her away and didn't want to leave myself. Of course you will visit Paris and the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre etc. Take a boat ride on the Seine from near the base of the tower. There is so much to see in Northern Italy too.
