What are good hotels to stay at in NYC and surrounding areas?

Q. we are looking into a vacation to NYC in a few weeks. we are trying to figure out where to stay and what cities are the best to stay in. we will be traveling with a child. does anyone live in or around NYC (or visit there often) that has some good advice??

Any Advice on a great vacation in the NY Tri-State area?
Q. I need a family vacation spot that is inexpensive, but comfortable for a week. If you know of great places to go, hotels to stay in, houses to rent and great shops and restaurants, please share those in your answer!

A. Saratoga Springs, NY has both ritzy and down to earth hot spots. There are a ton of historical sites (free), two very family friendly horse racing tracks (both flatrack and harness track) with general admission at a low price. There are amazing parks downtown and a beautiful "main drag" called Broadway lined with beautiful buildings and eclectic shops and eateries. There is a little bit of everything from old record shops to Brueggers Bagel Bakery. The architecture in this town is breathtaking. Just driving around looking at the beautiful old victorian homes could take all afternoon. The Ben & Jerry's sealed the deal for me though! (just a block off of broadway) There is an amusement park called Great Escape about an hour away to the north, and you are only about an hour away from Albany for tours of the NY state capital. And check out Sharp's Cozy Cottages, adorable little places for rent just a minute or two outside of downtown in a town called Gansevoort. If you want to go the camping/hiking route, theres nothing better than the Adirondack and Catskill mountain ranges. Sacandaga lake comes very higly recommended, small town atmosphere and one of the most pristine lakes in the NE. Check out this website, I can't even list all the cool things about the Saratoga area. PS, if you go in the fall, around late Sept to early Oct., the racetracks wont be open, but you will see the prettiest foliage you have ever seen.
