Where can I bring my dog in Michigan?
Q. My family and I are going on a little trip to Traverse City (2 days) and Mackinac Island (1 day) in Michigan. We don't want to leave our dog home and would like to take her along, but we don't want to be limited to what we can do. We already have a pet friendly hotel and we're getting a dog stroller. She is a 10 pound Shih Tzu/Pekingese. We probably can't take her into restaurants, but does anyone know what establishments, beaches, and tourist areas will allow dogs?
A. Even a pet friendly hotel will not allow you to leave a dog in a hotel room alone.
Having a dog with you will greatly limit the things you will be able to do on vacation. You will not be able to go into the shops, galleries, attractions or museums with a dog, and being summer, you can not leave the dog in your car.
These best thing to do is to leave your dog at home with a friend, or board her at a good facility where she can play with other dogs and have a camp experience of her own.
You'll be able to go and do what you want to do if you do not have a dog with you.
I live in Michigan and have been to Traverse City and Mackinac Island many, many times. It is fun to rent horses to ride around the island, or take the carriage tours. There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island, most peope get around on rented bicycles or by walking.

A. Some great places to visit on your trip are the Mackinac Island Butterfly House, Haunted Theatre, ride on a horse-drawn carriage, The Grand Hotel is very interesting to see. You'll want to go horseback riding at Mackinac Island State Park. There are plenty of hiking and biking tours available on the island. Joanne's Fudge is yummy. May Candy Shops has many flavors of fudge to eat, like Cherry, Rocky Road and Peanut Butter, to name a few. They are both excellent places for fudge. Some good malls are Surrey Hills, Lilac Tree Mall located downtown, and Carrousel Shops on Market Street. They have all the souvenirs and more that you'd want.
As for what to pack, I'd be prepared for both fall and spring weather. It can be a little chilly in the evenings this time of year so bring a sweater or light jacket. It won't be cold enough to snow, so don't worry about that. It can warm up nicely in the daytime, although I wouldn't take too many pairs of shorts. I don't think it'll be warm enough for shorts or bathing suits for swimming. Bring an umbrella in case it rains. Dress casually. Practically everybody is on vacation on the island.
