Q. I am planning on taking my daughter out of town next weekend, I need some suggestions for a quaint town within a couple hours from Cleveland, Ohio area. Hotel, Shopping, Food. We are only going for 2 days. Any Suggestions?

A. Lake Farmpark and Mentor is an excellent suggestion if you haven't ever been there and don't live near Mentor.

If you do go to Mentor, definitely take the kids to Mentor Headlands State Park, even if it's too cold for swimming. You could visit the Headlands Dune State Nature Preserve while there to show your kids what a natural beach looked like in Ohio.

The city-owned Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve & Marina also would offer an enjoyable hike.

Personally, however, I would consider Mohican State Park for a weekend trip because Mentor area attractions, which also include Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, would make great day trips.

I don't know when you want to make your trip, but the Mohican State Park cottages/campgrounds have an outdoor Olympic-sized pool. The park's resort has an Olympic-sized indoor pool, but resort guests can use the outdoor pool. Resort rates normally are much lower on nights other than Friday and Saturday night.

Most kids like to climb towers, and Mohican State Park has one of the last seven forest watchtowers left in Ohio. It's an ideal vantage to view leaf turn.

The Mohican River offers enjoyable and memorable family canoeing, other than in stormy weather when the river can become more formidable, and Loudonville may be that nice little town you would like to visit.

At nearby Malabar Farm State Park, your family could participate in farm chores, take great hikes or a wagon ride (hay rides are available on Saturdays in October). In the winter, Malabar Farm offers great sledding hills and ponds for skating.

If you wanted to give up swimming and rough it a little, you could stay at the Malabar Farm Hostel very cheaply. Loudonville reportedly makes its outdoor heated pool available for guests, but I don't know how late in the year it remains open.

Your children especially would enjoy a trip to the Richland County Carousel, for which Mansfield's Carousel District is named. The Richland County Carousel is the first new handcrafted carousel built in the U.S. since the 1930s. The carousel is open daily most days of the year.

What hotels in Cleveland have jacuzzis or whilrpools in the rooms?
